Is Your Company Secure From A Mass Murder Rampage?

April 6, 2009

In the crazy age we live where mass murders happen far to often in the workplace (really should never happen, but it does), employers must take steps to secure their workplace. Employees should encourage their employer to take steps to secure their workplace from the unexpected attack of a mass murderer or more politely referred to as workplace violence. A workplace is anywhere people work, and no workplace is immune. There are no exempt businesses. Recently, eight people were murdered in a nursing home by a rampaging gunman who did not know any of the victims, and none of the victims knew him. Who would think a nursing home would come under such an attack, but it did. Besides the most important aspect of this crime, protecting people, think of the liability issues.
Recently I sat is my doctor’s office which is a large local practice in a small town, but with approximately fifteen employees, and an office full of patients. Of course these horrible events only occur in the big cities, it can’t happen in rural America where everyone knows everyone, and everyone loves one another. Yea, right! It can happen anywhere. As I sat in the doctor’s office; I wondered? What if a rampaging gunman entered this facility right now, do these people (employees) have a plan in place of what they would do? Are they going to run for cover just anywhere or do they have planned “safe” rooms? Can they lock off the inner offices? Is there a plan in place to protect the patients? Who is going to do what? Do they have a plan? Of course the answer when I asked was: NO! Well, that is just not good enough anymore. Every business needs to have a plan. Does your business have a plan? Think about it!
Below are a few simple questions and suggestions you should consider:
-
1. Threat Assessment – Has your business ever conducted a comprehensive security plan for when your business is open as well as closed. Many business owners go to the expense of installing burglar alarm systems for when the business is closed, but fail to protect their most important asset – their people and customers.
-
2. What is your businesses vulnerability to attack? We protect our computers from virus attacks, and hackers; but do we protect our employees and customers? Again, this is an area which will need a comprehensive assessment which should be address with a professionally establish plan of assessment.
-
3. After the assessment has been conducted: What counter measures is your business willing to take. Are you (employer) willing to spend funds to protect people as well as property? Are you willing to train your employees? Are you willing to develop a plan?
-
4. Implementation – unless you implement the security measures and policies along with an occasional reminder to your employees, the whole effort will be wasted. You must implement, and continue to remain vigilant.

Years of study show we can’t seem to figure out why these killers do what they do, but we can succeed at making it more difficult for them to carry out their murderous intentions.
